उनका जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश में जौंवरी नाम गांव, तहसील-फ़िरोजाबाद, जिला- आगरा में पंडित लीलाधर के घर हुआ। श्रीधर पाठक सारस्वत ब्राह्मणों के उस परिवार में से थे जो 8वीं शती में पंजाब के सिरसा से आकर आगरा जिले के जोंधरी गाँव में बसा था। एक सुसंस्कृत परिवार में उत्पन्न होने के कारण आरंभ से ही इनकी रूचि विद्यार्जन में थी। छोटी अवस्था में ही इन्होंने घर पर संस्कृत और फ़ारसी का अच्छा ज्ञान प्राप्त कर लिया। तदुपरांत औपचारिक रूप से विद्यालयी शिक्षा लेते हुए ये हिन्दी प्रवेशिका (१८७५) और 'अंग्रेजी मिडिल' (१८७९) परीक्षाओं में सर्वप्रथम रहे। फिर 'ऐंट्रेंस परीक्षा' (१८८०-८१) में भी प्रथम श्रेणी में उत्तीर्ण हुए। उन दिनों भारत में ऐंट्रेंस तक की शिक्षा पर्याप्त उच्च मानी जाती थी। उनकी नियुक्ति राजकीय सेवा में हो गई। सर्वप्रथम उन्होंने जनगणना आयुक्त रूप में कलकत्ता के कार्यालय में कार्य किया। उन दिनों ब्रिटिश सरकार के अधिकांश केन्द्रीय कार्यालय कलकत्ता में ही थे। जनगणना के संदर्भ में इन्हें भारत के कई नगरों में जाना पड़ा। इसी दौरान इन्होंने विभिन्न पर्वतीय प्रदेशों की यात्रा की तथा इन्हें प्रकृति-सौंदर्य का निकट से अवलोकन करने का अवसर मिला। कालान्तर में अन्य अनेक कार्यालयों में भी कार्य किया, जिनमें रेलवे, पब्लिक वर्क्स तथा सिंचाई-विभाग आदि के नाम उल्लेखनीय हैं। धीरे-धीरे ये अधीक्षक के पद पर पहुँचे। १९१४ में सेवा-निवृत्त होने के पश्चात ये स्थायी रूप से प्रयाग में रहने लगे। यहीं सन १९२८ में इनका देहावसान हो गया
